Back in August, several SOVT athletes attended Special Olympics Health Messenger training in Washington, D.C., learning how promote inclusive health to their fellow athletes and communities. We asked Sean Fahey, SOVT athlete and board member, about his experience attending this training.
What was the most valuable part of health messenger training?
Sean Fahey: Meeting other athletes from other states. [...] I grew up in Baltimore Maryland until I was in the 9th grade so it was fun to go back to some familiar places.
What were some takeaways from the experience?
SF: Learning other ways to eat and exercise to stay fit and healthy.
What would you like people to know when it comes to inclusive health?
SF: Not everyone has a way of getting to their health care appointment but if they do get to their health care appointment it’s hard to make sure that the provider listens to them.
What would you say to encourage your fellow athletes to become health messengers themselves?
SF: What I would say to someone looking to become a health messenger is to watch what you eat and drink but also to be more active on a daily basis.
What do you love most about Special Olympics Vermont?
SF: I like being part of a community that helps and invites EVERYONE!
