Summer is a great time to get outside, stay active, and enjoy the sunshine! We asked Special Olympics Vermont Health Messenger Nicole Villemaire to share some of her favorite tips for staying safe and healthy this summer.
💧 Drink Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated is especially important on hot summer days. When you're spending time outside or being active, your body needs extra water to keep you feeling your best.
Aim to drink 11–15 cups of water each day, and drink even more if you're exercising or spending lots of time in the heat.
☀️ Wear Sunscreen
Help protect your skin whenever you're outdoors—even on cloudy days!
Choose a sunscreen that:
Has SPF 30 or higher
Is water resistant
Provides broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection
Remember to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

🦟 Use Bug Spray
Mosquitoes and ticks are common in Vermont during the summer.
Before spending time outside, apply an EPA-registered insect repellent that's labeled to protect against mosquitoes. It's especially helpful in the early morning and evening when mosquitoes are most active.

👒 Dress for the Weather
The right clothing can help keep you safe and comfortable outdoors.
Wear a hat to protect your face from the sun.
Choose lightweight clothing or a sun shirt with UV protection.
If you're hiking or walking in tall grass, wear long pants and long socks to help protect against ticks.
In the evening, wear long sleeves and pants to reduce mosquito bites.
Pack a rain jacket in case the weather changes.
