From Sweet to Strong: Team Vermont’s Added Sugar Challenge

In preparation for USA Games, the Team Vermont swim team took on an added sugar challenge—building awareness, reading labels, and tracking their intake over two weeks. Along the way, they learned that daily limits for added sugar are

25 grams for women and 36 grams for men.

As they tracked their meals, the athletes began to recognize both obvious and hidden sources of sugar—from sweets like ice cream to drinks and sauces. They also explored healthier swaps, including using Vermont maple syrup as a natural alternative.

As the week went on, their totals steadily decreased and a friendly competition began to take shape! Like any race, the final stretch required extra effort, and the team rose to the challenge. By the last day, every athlete finished completely added sugar-free — a huge accomplishment and a testament to their focus and teamwork!

"I was surprised to learn how much added sugar is in so many foods, like granola and wraps. It was hard to not have added sugar foods like flavored coffee creamer and my favorite pulled pork barbeque, the barbeque sauce had 16 grams of added sugar!"

— Colleen Duffy, Team Vermont Swim

This challenge not only helped the athletes build healthier habits, but also strengthened their confidence and preparation as they head into USA Games! Way to go Team Vermont!
