This spring, Special Olympics Vermont partnered with the University of Vermont’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (UVM SAAC) to launch a six-week Friday Fitness Club!
Each Friday, UVM student-athletes and SOVT athletes gathered on the outdoor track at UVM to connect, move, play, and build friendships through fitness. From stretching and running to spirited games of tennis-baseball, the club provided an inclusive and supportive space for everyone to have fun and stay active.

Fitness is for Everyone
Physical activity plays a vital role in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It improves physical health, builds self-esteem, and fosters meaningful social connections. Unfortunately, inclusive fitness opportunities can still be hard to find. That’s why programs like the Friday Fitness Club are so important — they not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also help break down barriers and create a sense of belonging through shared experiences.
"It's great for your mental health, it keeps you in shape, and it's fun!"
- Kate Bove SOVT athlete, Board Member, and Health Messenger.
Each session began with a group warm-up where everyone could meet and get to know each other. Then participants could break off and get moving with different activities for all ability levels and interests! The focus was always on having fun, trying new things, and staying active in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.
Teamwork Beyond the Field
We’re incredibly grateful to UVM SAAC for their leadership and partnership in bringing this club to life. Their commitment to inclusion created a space where everyone felt seen, supported, and celebrated. Initiatives like this not only empower athletes with IDD but also help shape more inclusive attitudes and actions among peers without disabilities — opening doors to greater accessibility and understanding in everyday life.
As we wrapped up the final session, one thing was clear: when we come together to move our bodies, connect with others, and support one another, everyone wins.
