In 2025, Special Olympics Vermont reached an incredible milestone: more than 500 health screenings provided across all five Healthy Athletes disciplines. These screenings focused on vision, hearing, dental health, physical therapy, and overall wellness represent access and inclusive care for athletes who too often face barriers within traditional healthcare systems.
For our athletes, Healthy Athletes screenings can be life-changing. Many athletes receive their first-ever vision exam, dental screening, or physical therapy assessment through this program. Screenings often identify untreated conditions, provide interventions like prescription eyewear or referrals, and empower athletes with knowledge about their own health. Most importantly, they help athletes perform better in sport and in life.
"Healthy Athlete screenings are important because they can provide health insights and assistance that the athletes may not have even known they needed."
- Kate Bove, SOVT Athlete, Health Messenger, and Board Member

Healthy Athletes is also deeply impactful for the healthcare professionals who volunteer their time and expertise. By working directly with athletes with intellectual disabilities, providers gain hands-on experience and develop a deeper understanding of inclusive, patient-centered care. These experiences change how they practice long after the screenings end making healthcare better for everyone.
We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers, healthcare professionals, partners, and supporters who made this milestone possible. Your compassion, skill, and commitment ensure our athletes are seen, heard, and cared for. Thank you for helping Special Olympics Vermont build a healthier, more inclusive future one screening at a time.
