A Summer of Pop-up Events

Updated: Sep 1, 2022

Happy September! We look forward to seeing athletes, coaches, volunteers and families at Fall Games on September 17 & 18! This summer, we've been on a mission to engage with our local communities to share what we do as organization, as well as spend more time with our athletes.

Southern Recreational Bocce

The Southern Recreational Bocce Tournament took place on July 31st at Rotary Field in Rutland. 40 athletes from Addison, Castleton, Rutland, and Bennington came to play; for some delegations it was their first time attending an in-person Special Olympics event since the pandemic! Thank you to the Rutland delegation for hosting us, and to everyone who joined us to make this a successful event.

Leddy Beach Bites

Athletes joined us at our information booth at Leddy Beach Bites on August 3rd! Our team was able to meet some athletes and their families and friends for the first time. We enjoyed talking about what everyone is up to over great food and a couple games of cornhole. Many people at the event were interested in volunteer opportunities, our upcoming events, as well what we do as an organization, so we'd call that a success!

Vergennes Day

Some members of our team made their way to Vergennes on August 27th for Vergennes Day. There were plenty of locals checking out the different crafts, food and nonprofit stalls. Mary, an Addison athlete spent most of her time at the event with us at our booth, encouraging people passing by to spin our wheel to win a fun prize. We had a variety of prizes and several people hit the jackpot winning SOVT branded items of their choice. We also got to catch up with Marcus-- one of the six athletes that competed at USA Games earlier this year. Many people we met were interested in volunteering, some have even volunteered for different Special Olympics state programs in the past.

Athlete End of Summer Party

After having to reschedule our Athlete End of Summer Party due to pouring rain on the original date, we were glad that many athletes and their families were able to make it to our event on August 31st at Oakledge Park. We had plenty of fun playing cornhole and wiffleball with athletes, and enjoying the great weather. To top it off, the Vermont Maple Creemee Company ice cream truck pulled up right by us and offered free ice cream to everyone at the party!
